Nat has a good post about kids not being turned onto science and technology as careers.

I have a few thoughts about this. The thing with technology and science(this is based mainly from what I see in NZ) is that those subjects are still portrayed as being nerdy (which I have to say, for most of tech jobs, I would be inclined to agree, but lets not dwell on that shall we ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

Like many people (whom are programmers) I was introduced to programming via QuickBasic, and there is a shortage of programmers? I wonder why…

So what is the solution? I propose a number of different ideas:

  1. There needs to be more things like KPL, and they need to be implemented into the curriculum (in NZ around year 7-8 there is a manitory subject called technology with a term in a computer room, more often than not this just turns into time for writing up assignments and the like, this would be the perfect time to spend a week or two on basic programming using KPL or similar).
  2. There needs to be multi million dollar campaign to make science and tech cool, this would include educating news anchor in tech, all areas of it.

Ok so it wasn’t really that many but hey ๐Ÿ˜‰

What’s your opinion? It would be interesting to hear what other people from different country’s think off this problem.

  1. I agree … But the main problem is the way teachers teach it. I believe if they make it more fun like maybe making games or useful application instead of useless boring stuff that will never be used, we may have more programmers … And if they teach something better in science then we’ll be better off. All they need to do is teach it in a more interesting way instead o the usall boring way … Think outside the box I say!

  2. Thats what I mean via implimenting implimenting somthing like KPL into the curriculim, KPL makes programming fun for little kids, just look at the examples.

as for the commnet about boring stuff, you need to know basic programming concepts to write good programs, just try modifying a program that someones freinds brother did.

I hate to stay it, but GJ did have a point (ok maybe not about the deskchecks but..).
